[S] history() error message on AIX

I receive the following error message when
trying to use the history() function and am
unsure about what to do.  This is on Splus 3.4
on AIX.

awk: cmd. line:10: (FILENAME=- FNR=1) fatal: use of
`continue' outside a loop is not allowed
 No match
 Warning messages:
   Error exit from unix command "$SHOME/cmd/history 10 '.'
           /home/u3/mcquaid/.Data/.Audit" in:
           unix(paste("$SHOME/cmd/history", max.expr, pattern, where))
