I am interested in putting up S-Plus help files on a web page. These
files start off in the UNIX
NROFF format. I use utilities from Brian Ripley to nicely convert them
to Windows .hlp format.
I tried using Microsoft's Win Help Workshop to convert the .hlp file to
HTML but was not
satisfied with the result (some of the special S-Plus formatting didn't
work quite right, and
the resulting HTML code is Internet Explorer-dependent).
I've heard about the existence of a utility program for converting the
NROFF format
help files to SGML for S-Plus v 5.x but I am running on Win 98 (for
now), so I need
a conversion utility that runs on Win/NT. I would like hyperlinks to be
created automatically
from the Table of Contents to individual functions, and from the SEE
ALSO entries.
Suggestions appreciated.
My motivation in all this is that I have a book manuscript in which
S-Plus help files
take up too much space, and I would like remove them from the book and
make them easily available for non-Windows
users over a web page. For Windows users, I can put the .hlp file on
the web page.
[Is there a .hlp file viewer available for UNIX/Linux?]
The utility of all this will depend on how many readers are interested
in seeing
detailed program documentation before they install the software
themselves.
I don't know how to estimate the number of such readers who would profit
from the
availability of this help documentation.
