We are having difficulty getting the help files for the MASS libraries
to work. This is probably due to the fact that our sys admin is
unfamiliar with S+ and I am not well versed in system administration.
We are using S+ 5.1 on Solaris 2.7, but we are having the same problem
on SGI.
Specifically, after we run the installation and move the directories
(MASS, nnet, etc...) into the $SHOME/library/ directory, we can attach
these libraries in S+, but cannot access the help files:
> library(MASS)
> help(rlm)
/opt/local/src/splus/s-plus5.1/cmd/sgml_help:
/opt/local/src/splus/s-plus5.1/library/MASS/.Data//__Hhelp/rlm.html:
cannot create
Alert!: Unable to access document.
lynx: Can't access startfile
file://localhost/opt/local/src/splus/s-plus5.1/library/MASS/.Data//__Hhelp/rlm.html
The directory $SHOME/library/MASS/.Data//__Hhelp/ is empty. Now I
understand that it is trying to create the html help file in this
directory on the fly and that we can solve this problem by giving
everyone write access to this directory, but my sys admin is rightfully
reluctant to do this. My question to those of you who have done this
successfully is this: Were those html files supposed to be created
during installation (like in the standard S+ libraries)? If so, what
did we most likely miss? If not, is there a way to create them all now?
Thanks for your help.
