I would try two things in this regard:
1. Do it first using the GUI, then try to find the GUI command in
history (Windows -> History -> Display). Then you would need to figure
out how to use the GUI command. Since these are (largely) undocumented,
it might not be easy.
2. It can be done with only modest difficulty in R; see
"www.r-project.org" -> search -> "R site search", especially "plotmath".
There was a recent discussion of this on "r-help" with some examples.
If you want to do it in S-Plus, you could install R, find the
functions in R, and attempt to port them to S-Plus. This creates a
license question. You would need to check with an attorney about that,
but it is my impression that if you only do this for yourself, there
should be no problem. If you want to share the code with others, you
are required to provide any modifications you make to the code to the R
community AND announce to the world what you are giving them that
actually came from R. However, please check with an attorney before you
do it (and let me know what the attorney says if you do).
hope this helps. spencer graves

Hi all,
Does anyone know of a way to annotate plots with special characters (like
<alpha> and <beta> for example) from a command line - or can this only be
done through the GUI?
Many thanks
