I don't know the 'profile' function you mention. Doug Bates has long
been one of the leading advocates of profiling, but I couldn't find
'profile' in the index of Pinheiro and Bates (2000) Mixed-Effects Models
in S and S-Plus (Springer). Evidently, he's not found it sufficiently
useful to include it prominently in this book. In his more recent work,
I've seen more use of Monte Carlo and MCMC.
If it were my problem, I might try listing getAnywhere('profile.nls') and modifying the result to call nlme with a range of choices for the 'fixed' argument. However, I don't know if this will work.
Hope this helps.

Hello Everyone, I'm interested in generating the profile z plots, traces, contours etc. for my NLME model fits. I have looked in the help files and located a profile function but i'm unclear as to whether this is what i'm looking for or not. These plots were used as a tool to investigate the possibility of eliminating random effects from the nlme model in an article, "Model Building for Nonlinear Mixed-Effects Models", by Jose Pinheiro and Douglas Bates. Any help with making these plots possible is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Savi __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo!
