To the subscribers of the s-news mailing list:

On Monday, 2 October, 2000, the s-news mailing list is going to be
switched from running under the majordomo 1.94 to the majordomo 2 mailing
list system. This change has a number of implications:

-- The daily digest will no longer be a separate list tied to the
regular list, but will rather be a settable option for each user.

-- The digest will be MIME conformant.

-- The mailing lists hosted at this site have been broken down into
various virtual domains, so the host name for the s-news mailing list will
be lists.biostat.wustl.edu (s-news@wubios.wustl.edu will still work
however).

-- The majordomo address will be mj2@lists.biostat.wustl.edu. Since we
are gradually converting lists over, the old majordomo address will still
handle the majordomo 1.x lists. Note that mj2@wubios.wustl.edu will not
work since that is a different virtual domain.

-- The user interface and list-owner interface will be much easier to
use.

-- There will be a (fairly-functional) web interface.

-- The HTML archives will be batch processed once a day. This is not
due to the switchover, but rather a need to run these more effeciently in
a batch instead of one at a time.

The way the change will work is this:

  1) Set up the list configuration, with the digest volume being
incremented by one from the old digest.

  2) Subscribe everyone to the new list. This will be done so that
everyone will get the introductory message.

  3) Change the incoming mail aliases (which are all that majordomo 2 uses
anyway) to point to the new list.

  4) Force out the last digest under the old list (using majordomo 1's
outgoing mail aliases).

It should at that point be fully-functional.

Here are the mail addresses associated with the new list:

Messages to the list should go to:

      s-news@lists.biostat.wustl.edu

Messages for the owner should go to:

      s-news-owner@lists.biostat.wustl.edu

Messages containing commands (like subscribe or unsubscribe) should go
   to:

      mj2@lists.biostat.wustl.edu, or
      s-news-request@lists.biostat.wustl.edu

Most of the Email commands that have been available to users will still be
supported, but a number of enhancments will be available. More
information can be had by sending the command "help" to the address
"mj2@lists.biostat.wustl.edu", or by browsing this URL:

   http://www.biostat.wustl.edu/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr?domain=biostat?func=help

Note that the web help system is fairly slow since it's formatted on the
fly. Later I'll try to have a set of preformatted majordomo help pages
available.
