Further to Prof. Ripley's point re: commercial viability
and a previous post by me, in "my neck of the woods"
I would like to see a hundred or so "non-professional
statisticians" using Splus to do descriptive stats and
graphs and occasionally more challenging things in
"parallel" with me or other statisticians (I was able to
do this recently in my old neighborhood using
SPSS for windows)

To help make this happen, I am planning on doing
some demo's with the GUI's and had already
decided the with version 4 release 3, I would have
to suggest that the GUI itself was still at the "Beta"
stage and would be improved ...

I believe it is in the interest of the statistical community
that flexible and powerful software like Splus be "usable"
by almost anyone and a solid (albeit distracting to us)
GUI is necessary.
