I'm using the S-Plus loess smoother on some one-dimensional data
(S-Plus 4.5 rel 2 on NT 4.0). What does the loess function do with data
closer than about 1/2 the span to an "end"? I've looked in Venables and
Ripley and in the S-Plus manuals and didn't find anything that appeared to
specifically address this.
