Which version of `Splus5'? It matters: they use steadily less memory so it
is important to keep up to date. (5.0 release 3 is much better than release
2.)

There are two issues here: a Sparc 5 is much slower than a Sparc 20
(or did you mean an Sparc Ultra 5?), and S-PLUS 5.x is slower than 3.4
and uses much more memory.

Make sure you have enough swap space installed. In going from S-PLUS 3.4 to
5.0r2 we needed to add 100Mb swap per S-PLUS user. For me wth 5.0r3 96Mb
RAM is enough (64Mb is not), but that is for a one-user machine.

As a beta tester what I can say is restricted, but for me 5.1 will very
much ameliorate these memory and speed issues.
