Dear S-list:
I want to know how Splus fits a linear mixe-effects model when I use the
lme function(My understanding now is that, Splus will run lm for each
subsample of data for each cluster, eg, Splus will run N times lm if there
are N clusters in the sample. Then Splus will fit the maximum likelihood
function with the N coefficients obtained in the Ns time lm to find the
mean of the normal distribution. The found mean will be the estimation for
the fixed effect. However, I am not sure whether my understanding is
correct with the limited information in the Splus Guide to statistics
manual.) The manual refers to Laird and Ware (1982), but there is no
detailed reference. Is Laird and Ware (1982) a book or a paper, if a
paper, in which journal? Can somebody explain the procedure of Lme to me?
I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.
