Subject: [S] Discontinuation of Watcom FORTRAN - cause for alarm (?)

I have been considering buying a copy of Watcom FORTRAN 77 for a while now,
with the objective of including FORTRAN code
in my S+ functions (W95/NT) , but I was recently alerted via the list of
it's impending demise. Watcom FORTRAN will be available until August 31
1999. The price for this soon to be discontinued product was an amazing
$500. Incidentally the C++ analog is $350 and is headed for discontinuation
as well. This is based on the letter to list and my subsequent visit to
http://search.sybase.com/

This raises some questions in my mind:

Am I better off getting a copy of the Watcom compiler than a compiler that
will be continued-e.g. Microsoft ?
I am told that if I want to have linkable object code that I need Watcom,
but that I can make .DLL's with any FORTRAN compiler. Is this added
capability just a switch in compiling/running the code- or is there a real
difference?

If I do purchase the WATCOM compiler(s), Is the version of Watcom FORTAN/C
critical? I am told that there needs to be version compatibility between my
compiler and the version of WATCOM code in which Splus (4.5 or 2000 in my
case) was compiled.
Will future versions of S-Plus be compiled in an unsupported code ?

Thanks in advance...
