Hi,
This is to follow up on a message I posted earlier about speed
and memory problems with S+ 5.1 for UNIX:
> I have been using S+ 5.1 on a Sun Ultra 10 (333MHz, 128MB memory),
> and have found that the speed and memory management in this version
> are substantially worse than they were in Version 3.4, at least for
> the kinds of things I do.
I've heard from three other people who were also frustrated with
the performance of 5.1 in simulations: one, like me, has gone back
to Version 3.4; one now uses R for all his simulations, which he
says run 2-4 times faster there than under 5.1; and another is a
frustrated Linux user who doesn't have the option of going back to
3.4.
A couple of people expressed concern that most of Mathsoft's time
and energy seem to be devoted to S+ 2000, with the UNIX community
relegated to beta testing of the new S+ engine.
A Mathsoft representative, who contacted me right after my original
message appeared, assured me that Mathsoft is still committed to
the UNIX environment and that they would be working to improve the
performance of 5.x.
