Many thanks to Matthew Zack, Don MacQueen, and James Jetton for their
answers to the following question:
I just received an e-mail containing an attachment with data I would
like to plot using S-Plus. The file was created using Statview for a
Mac. I use S-Plus 4.5 with Windows 95. The attachment says the type is
application/octet-string and encoding is base 64. Can anyone advise me
on how to read the file and input the data to S-Plus?
Matthew sent me decode64.exe, and when I had trouble with it, even
offered to decode it for me. He then informed me that the file I
received was not in BASE64 format.
Don said that he didn't think it was possible and suggested that I
request that the sender resend it in text format.
James has a Mac with Statview, and also offered to convert the file for
me. However, he too said that the file was not base 64 and was not a
Statview file either. He mentioned that it might have been corrupted
through e-mail.
I waited to summarize in the hopes that there would be a happy ending to
report. The sender resent the data on paper by FedEx, and I am now
busily reentering the data.
