[S] parameters(data) question

Splus5.1 does not like "parameters(data) <- NULL". It gives error message 
"Problem in parameters(data, NULL): value must be a list". 
It happened when predict.nlme() was called.
Does anyone else also have this problem?  
Any suggestion is appreciated.
