Hello,
with respect to my posting below, many thanks to Nick Ellis, Hong Ooi,
Eusebio Arenal Gutierrez, Prof Brian Ripley and Bill Dunlap for their
helpful comments. The problem was simply that
a) Splus needs write access to at least some files in _Data, and
b) I hadn't realised that on copying files back from the CD onto the hard
drive, the file attributes were all still set as "read only" (that being set
by the operating system when they were written onto the CD). Selecting the
files on the hard drive and manually (under Properties in Win95) changing
their attributes back to "archive" fixed all my problems.

Hi, can anyone help with the following problem? A month ago, I backed up a
_Data folder onto a CD. Now I have inadvertently removed some objects from
the current version of that database on my hard drive, so I thought that the
easiest way to recover them would simply be to retrieve them from the copy
on the CD. To my consternation (!), when I try to attach the _Data folder on
the CD, I get the following cryptic message
Error in cat(file=paste(dir,"__db3.1",sep="/")): couldn't open file
"D:\...\_Data/__db3.1" in cat
HELP!!
I notice that there's a forward slash after "_Data" in the error message -
could that be the problem??
Why on earth should I have problems accessing a database folder that worked
perfectly before I copied it on to the CD???
Copying the folder from the CD to my hard drive and trying to access it from
there also doesn't help ???????????
