Many thanks to Chuck Taylor, A.J. Rossini, and Bill Dunlap for their
reply to my question about on-line help in ESS/S-PLUS 5.1. I did not
receive any e-mails which where not posted to the list so I have not
included them in this e-mail.
At present the best solution seems to be to use ESS 5.1.11 and change
\"cat\" to \"slynx -dump" in the ESS source file called 'essd-sp5.el'.
On my Linux box (Redhat 6.0, Emacs 20.3) this made help work in the
S+5 process buffer and in the help buffers. However it did not work
in S-source buffers. Under HP-UX 10.20 (Emacs 20.5) the same apply,
but here the command line completion did not work and caused all (?)
object names to be listed in the S+5 buffer (this may be due to a
sub-optimal installation of Emacs).
An other solution is to avoid to use help in ESS and start help
windows with a S+ command like 'help(lm,win=T)'.
Happy Holidays
