Many thanks to David Smith of Mathsoft for a quick reply. I need to become
more familiar with the menus. Here is his response:

Hi Tom,

This is easy. Just create the bubble plot (select three columns, click on
bubble plot button). Then right-click on a data point, choose Vary Symbols
from the menu, and in the dialog set Vary Style By to Other Column, and set
the Column appropriately. See the attached .SGR file for an example.

Sincerely,
# David Smith

Subject: [S] enhanced Bubble Plots

Hello:

I am using Splus 2000 under NT 4.0.

It's possible to do bubble plots using the menus, and I'm able to vary the
symbols on plots according to levels of a variable, but I REALLY want to do
the following:

I want to plot x vs y, varying symbols by treatment group, say, square,
triangle, circle.
(This alone would be easy)
Also, I want to vary the size (area, I guess) of each symbol--no matter
which type--according to the value of another continuous variable, z.
(This alone would be a bubble plot)

I guess there would be problems with such a fugure, comparing areas of
triangles and circles, but suppose I'm only interested in comparing within
figure types, but I still want all three treatments plotted on the same set
of axes.

Is this possible in Splus? Thanks in advance...

                                Tom Richards
