This is not an S-plus question - I'm just tapping into the large body of
knowledge here...

I'm in need of a statistical method to detect non-randomness in a grid. If
I have quantitative results over a 2D grid, I'd like to have an general
test for spatial patterns. I've seen methods for qualitative data that are
based on joint count statistics that form an odds ratio, but I am not aware
of anything for quanitative data.

I know that this is a very vague question; I'm looking for places to start.
I can respond with more details.

Thanks in advance,

Max
