Estimating distributions

In the light of recent queries by Xao Ping and Stanley Rubinstein for code,
etc. for fitting probability distributions, perhaps list members could post
any information they have about this topic in general?

I'd particularly like to hear about non-MLE, non-method of moments methods
for the two-parameter gamma, and of any methods for the generalised gamma
distribution.
