Almost before I had submitted my inquiry (!!!) an answer came back
from Dennis Murphy of the University of Manitoba suggesting that the
person I sought was David Blackwell.
Just on the off-chance that the interview I'd seen was not in the
Notices of the AMS but rather in some statistical journal, I checked
out the Current Index to Statistics.
Lo and behold, in the inaugural issue, there was an interview with
David Blackwell. I dashed over to the library, looked up that issue,
and it was indeed the interview that I had in mind.
While I was at the library, further communications came in from Peter
Rabinovitch and David Evans, also suggesting David Blackwell.
Thanks to all. As has frequently been observed before, this list is
wonderful!!!
cheers,
Rolf Turner
