Couldn't find a function definition for "map"

Can anyone explain why I get this response when I try the map function,
and how to fix it?

  > map()
  Problem: Couldn't find a function definition for "map"

Everything I read seems to presuppose that the function exists and is
available. The installation guide instman.pdf doesn't seem to help.
We have S-PLUS Version 5.1 Release 1 for Sun SPARC, SunOS 5.5 : 1999.
