to anyone who can offer any commentry
(this email has been sent in one form or another directly to some
recipients as i have had trouble getting my emails listed. if you have
received a similar email from me, please disregard this one).
apparently when running splus in BATCH mode under unix, splus
will automatically place the job in background using some sort of
script without the need to use the & character viz
Splus BATCH file.in file.out
what i would like to know is if the job is really in the
background in the same way in which unix will place a job in the
background using &, such that I can use the returned prompt to run
other unix commands without affecting the running of Splus.
the reason i ask this is perhaps somewhat pedantic, but when the
job is placed in background i do not get a PID number printed to
the screen, as occurs when you use the & character to place job in
background in UNIX (interestingly if you add the & character
ie Splus BATCH file.in file.out & the PID does not correspond to
any job when you view via ps -ef | fgrep username).
anyway, any comments would be useful in regards to others
experience with BATCH mode and background.

ps: i am using Version 5.1 Release 1 for Linux 2.0.31 : 1999
