Prof. Brian Ripley is the Professor of Applied Statistics at the
University of Oxford and a member of the Department of Statistics as
well as a Professorial Fellow of St. Peter's College. He is, amongst
many other publications, author of "Modern Applied Statistics with
S-PLUS", "Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks" and "S Programming".

Data mining has become popular in science, engineering and in
traditionally data-rich industries such as banking, insurance and
market research. There are emerging applications in official,
environmental and medical statistics.
This course will concentrate on methods for finding the structure (as
distinct from manipulating the databases) using the tools, which are
available in or for R and S-PLUS. More information on the course is
