.prefs file

This is perhaps inappropriate for the list but it is an S-plus problem and 
I am really just trying to catch some developer's attention.
Does anyone know of any use for the .prefs file in windows versions of 
S-Plus other than that of an automatic trash can to collect errors and, 
that must be dumped periodically to keep running smoothly?
