Regarding porting of *nix functionality to MS:


There are other ways to do this, but check out Dave Korn's UWIN package.
Get the basic and the perl part and install them under windows to have
*nix terminal functionality.

When I am forced to use  a Microsoft disabled machine the only thing that
keeps me sane is the Uwin terminal window and tools.


This is still highly suboptimal for me as I use a lot of special functions
in R/S that drop to shell etc, but with copies of R and uwin you can get
a lot done despite Mr Gates best intentions.
