The website contains a version of the sm library that works with R4 and
SPLUS 6.x

The problem was that the libraries were created for R3 and SPLUS 3.x and
are not compatible with later releases.
SPLUS' Steve Weller pointed out that I could try the migration wizzard but
as Sherry Lamonica (SPLUS again) points out, that facility is a simple
translation that cannot deal with complex issues such as multiple
inheritance.  The latter have to be dealt with manually, naturally.
