Given our experiences with Win98 and Win98SE, we upgraded all our systems to Win2000 Pro or WinXP Pro. We had more than 2 dozen identical machines preinstalled with Win98SE. More than a third of them experienced Windows "Shutdown" problems. After trying every software tweak published on the net, replacing motherboards, NIC cards, video cards, memory chips (all at the vendor's expense) without ever resolving these problems, we reformatted the hard drives of all those machines with Windows 2000 Pro. Interestingly enough, the problems never occurred again. This experience led me to conclude that Windows 98SE (in particular) was one of Microsoft's least stable OSes.

That Insightful considers this particular problem intractable for Win98 comes as no surprise.
