Thanks to Herb Root, Leonid Gibiansky, Jean Adams, Marc Schwartz and Jim Pratt for their quick responses and for sharing their processes for copying graphs to Word.

The suggestions (in the order received) were to:

  1.  Use an intermediate drawing program such as Corel draw for touching up graphs.
  2. Use copy/paste special
  3. Avoid the need for cropping by adjusting the margins in S-Plus using the graphical parameter mar.
  4. export to a Windows metafile format
  5. Jim Pratt provided the command he uses to export to wmf.
Using

trellis.device(graphsheet, format='WMF',width=9,height=6,print.background="" file='plot2##.wmf',color.scheme='Trellis black on white',orientation='landscape'),

a customization of Jim's command, seems to work.

Thanks again to all who responded.
