Are you familiar with the work of MacGregor and others at the MacMaster
Advanced Control Consortium (http://www.chemeng.mcmaster.ca/macc/)?
With principal components analysis of satellite photos, they were able
to classify land use patterns. Sorry I can't provide a more complete
citation right now.
