THEORY. 

Frank Harrell gave a number of references, but he also responded to the
list.

Kim Elmore gave a PDF file of an article in Meterology.

John MacCuish suggested multidimensional scaling

and Edward Malthouse suggested an article by Frank and Freedman in 1993
Technometrics.
