If broker.code is the original code:
broker4 <- substring(broker.code,1,4)
should contain the first four characters.

This is a question regarding the analysis of real estate data with S-PLUS
for Windows.
Short background: I am importing a .dbf file into S-PLUS for Windows which
contains listings of homes for sale. The data source is a "Multiple Listing
Service" that Realtors subscribe to. The file has dozens of
columns (property type, list price, address, etc.) and thousands of rows
(each row is a property for sale).
Question: There is one column that contains the listing broker code. For
example, Coldwell Banker
Legacy listings have the code "CLBR##," where ## varies from 01 on up,
corresponding to the
numerous CLBR offices in a particular metro area. In other words, the first
four characters denote
the real estate company, and the last two characters denote the various
brokers.
I want to analyze by real estate company, not by broker. That is, I want to
extract the first four characters of this broker code. How do I do it?
Thank you in advance. It has been several years since I programmed in
S-PLUS.
