thanks to P.Burns and S.Buttrey for their tips, but unfortunately it doesn't work.
i'm afraid D.Smith has right...

An error like that is an internal error in S-PLUS caused by a bug. It's not
something you did wrong.

The support team can help you repair this particular problem -- email
support@insightful.com.

It's likely the bug that caused the original problem has now been fixed in
S-PLUS 6.2 which was released yesterday. If you're under maintenance, you'll
get your update automatically in 2-4 weeks.

I'm not sure if this is it, but sometimes bad things happen
when S-PLUS thinks that the random seed is corrupted.
Try:

rm(.Random.seed)

and see if that helps.

Hi. Here's what I would do. This usually works.

1.) Stop S-Plus.
2.) Go to your S-Plus home directory. There is a .Data and a .Prefs
directory. Delete the .Prefs directory. Do not delete .Data!
3.) Re-start S-Plus. It will ask you if it can create a new .Prefs. Say
"Yes."

And all will be well!
