symbols in graphs

Hi,
I was trying to follow the Programmer's Guide to get symbols into my
graphs but have not been successful. For example, I tried to get an
alpha into the y-axis label

xyplot( ...,ylab = "\\\"Symbol\"a",...)

but that did not work. Any suggestions?
