lme question

I would like to reproduce in lme the functionality of the GROUPS= option in
the RANDOM statement of PROC MIXED in SAS.  This option allows separate
random variance and covariance parameters for different levels of a grouping
variable.

Can anyone tell me how to go about this in lme?
