plot options

hi all,
I am trying to produce a simple plot with the tick marks and labels empty (to be added later on with the axis function). When I do 

plot(x, y, lab=F)

I get a plot with the horizontal axis stretching out of bound in both directions (see attached). Does anybody know why this happens or how to fix it?
