Making a graphsheet an active device

When I'm working on a project, I like to keep a single graphsheet open and
send any output that I wish to view to a separate tab within the
graphsheet.  However, if I ever close the graphsheet, and then try to
reopen and assign it to a graphics device (with dev.set( ) for example) I
am unable to do so.  My question:  Is there a way to close a graphics
device and then reopen it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
