SIGKDD Explorations 2005 June Issue Call For Participation

Special Issue: Text Mining and Natural Language Processing

IMPORTANT DATES
Submission deadline: April 15, 2005
Acceptance notice: May 9, 2005
Camera-ready due: May 31, 2005

DESCRIPTION
With large amounts of text data now available on-line, both on the Internet and
in corporate repositories, text mining is an area of growing interest.
Historically, Data Mining researchers have come out of the statistics, database
and machine learning communities. Despite a few exceptions, it has by and
large
had little interaction with the computational linguistics and natural language
processing (NLP) community. Given that the subject matter of text mining is
free text, one might naturally assume techniques developed over the last few
decades in computational linguistics and NLP should make big contributions
towards the younger field of text mining. However, other than in the area of
information extraction, empirical evidence has not borne this out.

For this special issue, we would like to explore how NLP can help Text Mining,
beyond the straightforward case of using NLP for Information Extraction. We
would also like to explore how new machine learning techniques developed in the
mining community can help with NLP knowledge development or help NLP
applications scale up. Topics that are of interest include but are not limited
to:

* Machine learning techniques and NLP
* Mining information extractor extracted text data
* Learning based Information Extraction
* Syntactic parsing and text categorization
* Use of corpus-based word clusters or other text representations (e.g. LSI
vectors) to improve syntactic parsing
* Use of text mining to create NLP resources
* Applications or systems that combine text mining and NLP
* How to bridge the gap between NLP and text mining
* How NLP can help search engines

might fall outside the special issue theme. Submissions can be made in
any one of the following categories.

        exceeding 15 pages
      - topical articles on problems and challenges
      - well-articulated position papers
      - technical articles not exceeding 15 pages.
      - news items on the order of 1-3 paragraphs
      - Brief announcements not exceeding 5 lines in length.
      - review articles of products and methodologies not exceeding 20
        pages
      - reviews/summaries from conferences, panels and special meetings.
      - reports on relevant meetings and committees related to the field
      - for-pay advertisements
These submissions should be made to sunita@iitb.ac.in or liub@cs.uic.edu

or zaiane@cs.ualberta.ca
