There is a package of routines written for R for this purpose. See manual pages at

I couldn't tell you for sure whether this works in S-Plus with minor adjustments, but my recollection is that at least some parts of it might.

You are right that this area is a weakness of S-Plus and Insightful's view has been that this area is covered by competing packages and it isn't
worthwhile for them to get into it.
