Hi,

I was overwhelmed by the responses. In all the years I've used S-Plus from way
back in Bell Labs till now, I never had this problem. Fortunately, all the
responses pointed to the same problem - a corrupted .PREF file. It seems this
is a common problem (but my first time).

Chuck Taylor, Sr. Quality Assurance Engineer at Insightful Corporation,
suggested I see

http://www.insightful.com/insightful_faq/search.asp

and search for "red background".

Max Zhou wrote that I should

1) go to the S-News archive:
http://www.biostat.wustl.edu/archives/html/s-news/
2) search for: ".pref" the first documents will be the one titled:. "Fw:
Bug with graphsheets" posted Max Zhao. The procedures inside the message body
should solve the problem.

I've since deleted .PREF and started again - the problem is fixed.

But why do I have to do this? Why can't I just edit .PREF?

Walt
