Splitting the list would be difficult to implement. The dividing line may
be vague, and people may not always know which sublist to post on. One
would have to be at the "Advanced" level to know what quesion is
"intermediate". And imagine when people start to post question to every
sublist ...

Perhaps one easier solution here: given that the purpose of posting here is
to obtain free advice, It would seem fair for those who do not wish to take
harsh wording to state: "Friendly worded reply only."

I've been following this list with interest almost from its inception,
though rarely contribute, as I do so little with statistics these days. :(
The issue of civility comes up regularly. I sympathize with newbies,
and those patient teachers who empathize with them, but also with
those who would be sad to see *any* list participants banned, ignored,
or otherwise interfered with. We may regret the harsh tone of some
contributors, but some of these same individuals have clearly been very
generous with their time and considerable talents, and contributed
enormously
to the value of the list. It is inescapable that a single list will have
to
cope with a very wide range of abilities with respect to statistics,
numerical
computing, and computer science, as well as a range of personality types
and professional expectations.

One solution would be to split the list into 2-3 sublists, with the strings
"beginner," "intermediate" and "advanced" (or something equivalent but
shorter)
added to their names. The automatically-added footers could be modified to
include a sentence stating the goals of that sublist, the level of
expertise
expected of postings, and the level of civility expected in responses.
Experts could dip into the beginner and intermediate lists only when they
were
so inclined, with no grounds for ad hominem attacks on posters, and
elementary
questions would presumably be much less frequent in the more advanced
lists.
Newbies and intermediates could quietly monitor the more advanced lists for
purposes of self-education.

I realize that considerable effort would be required from the list
administrators to set up something like this, but it might be worth further
condideration, in the interest of maintaining comity in this valued
community!

Best Regards to All,

Rick Rodgers
