Data import from excel revisited

Dear All:

This question should be probably addressed to the Insightful people, but maybe somebody else can elucidate the issue. In the S-PLUS 2000, it was very easy to import an Excel file using GUI. You just click File->Import Data, select file type which is ".xls", and indicate the path using browser. The same procedure in S-PLUS 6.2 invites you to fill out two dozen fields in the message box "by hands", without any automation of selecting the available options. The procedure is pretty tedious and completely equivalent to providing the arguments to the "importData" function, and it is not clear why in this case the GUI function is built in at all. I hope that I am missing something here and in fact the 6.2 version of this GUI item is a step forward, not back. If not, then, I guess, my question to Insightful is this:

 

What is the rationale behind the decision that so simple and so traditional functionality has been dropped from the S+6.2?
