SR Millis,

The company did (still does ?) offer a second
license at a discount for this
purpose.

Thanks, John. Yes, I checked into the discount--I
believe that it is 80% of the initial price. Still
too expensive for me/my department.

I'm concerned that Insightful is will take the same
path as that other large company in Chicago, ie,
pricing and pitching its product to the casual
business user who likes pretty graphs more than
advanced algorithms---and is willing to pay a lot
money for them.

Actually, the home copy purchase price is generally 20% of the regular price.  The annual renewal is now 20% of that.  I have had persuaded my employers (the last three) to buy S-Plus and the mods and I have paid for my own home copy purchase and license renewal for all that time.  By using the same disk on two machines up to now, you have been getting over.  All of the software companies are cracking down.  Why is this  a surprise?
