Thanks to Brad Biggerstaff, jvs@stat.ohio-state, Bill Dunlap, Sam Buttrey, and Thomas Jagger for "insightful" input (sorry :). To my inquiry about replacements using a single join condiion between tables, respondents recommended either match() or merge(), both of which will do the job, depending on what you need for the outcome.
