Many thanks to Marc Vayssieres, who has sorted this out for me (beneath).  Nothing to do with Splus, and everything to do with Microsoft.

I tried with S-Plus 7.0 and got the same /240/240 in the last lines. However I have been tricked by Excel before...
And, in fact, these (invisible in Excel) codes are indeed in your spreadsheet. I just selected these cells and pressed the delete key and now they're gone and Splus read your sheet as intended (see attached). In the spreadsheet you sent if you use Edit > Find in Excel and type nothing in the "find what:" box you will see that find will skip the cells that contain invisible codes.
