Thanks to Tim Keighley, Dimitris Rizopoulos and Tony Plate for there
responses.

Dimitris suggested the use of "grep", this is OK but I was hoping to find
something more general where I wouldn't have to test for each special
character separately.

Tim suggested the use of "regMatch", I wasn't aware of this function, thank
you Tim.  I haven't explore this avenue yet but, for my purpose, it might
just do the job.

Tony supplied a function which is very general and would test for all
special characters, and this for three different protocols.  Thanks Tony.
