I am running R 2.3.1 and SPSS 14.0.1 on a Windows XP computer. When I import SPSS .sav datafiles into R using either the "spss.get" function of the Hmisc library or the "read.spss" function of the foreign library, my variable names are truncated to 8 characters. Since I find that my longer variable names are more meaningful and therfore easier to work with, I would like to know if there is a way to stop R from truncating my SPSS variable names during the import process.
