I use S-PLUS maps for simple GIS (vector-based) mapping, but for serious
work you may need to consider something like ArcGIS.

I have .[GLN] files for the world (high and low resolution) in both
euro-centric and pacific-centric forms.
The problem is they are more than 15 years old, and a lot has happened to
political boundaries in that time.
Are these of any use to you?
