Use of weights in a GAM

I'm using Splus version 8.0.  I'm looking for information on using the weights option in a GAM in Splus.  Are any value of weights acceptable?  Can you use the weights option with any kind of smoother available in a GAM?  If anyone has information or examples they can send me I'd really appreciate it.
