Image Graphics: Solution

In looking for a solution, I actually read the S-Plus 8 manual and 
checked on-line FAQs. I can get the behavior I want by setting 
use.legacy.graphics(T), which creates behavior like that in S-Plus 7. I 
can create image palettes within S-Plus 8, but for now, the 
use.legacy.graphics(T) does exactly what I need.
