Thread-topic: [S] GEV distribution

First, thanks to Steve Su, Jason Overstreet, and Harry Southworth for answering my email. Harry provided the link below to the CSAN packages. For those of you who do not know about this site, it is an absolute treasure. Check it out. It does indeed look like the ismev package has what I need: gev.fit and a couple other gev functions for S-Plus adapted from R. However, I cannot get it to install on my system. There is an S-PLUS 8 Guide to Packages pdf file on the main page that describes how to use install.packages() to install the packages. The package pkgutils must be installed first using install.pkgutils(), which I did. The Guide uses rpart as an example package to download and work with. I followed the same steps with ismev, but got the warning messages:

> install.packages("ismev")

The downloaded packages are in C:\DOCUME~1\wclamber\LOCALS~1\Temp\di0381A1.tmp\downloaded_packages

Warning messages:

1: argument 'lib' is missing: using C:\Documents and Settings\wclamber\Application Data\Insightful\splus80_WIN386\library in: install.packages("ismev")

2: unable to move temporary installation 'C:\Documents and Settings\wclamber\Application Data\Insightful\splus80_WIN386\library\fi038282.tmp\ismev' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\wclamber\Application Data\Insightful\splus80_WIN386\library\ismev' in: unpackPkg(foundpkgs[okp, 2], foundpkgs[okp, 1], lib, installWithVers)

I get the same error by downloading the ismev file and trying to install it from my PC. It says “argument lib is missing”, but I don’t know what value to give that argument – there is not an example like it in the Guide. I stepped through the rpart example and it worked like the Guide said, so there is something different about ismev. Anyone have an idea how to work around this? I really need the ismev package. Thanks

The ismev package might help you. It's on page 4 of CSAN

I am using S-PLUS 8 on a Windows XP PC

Is there a function(s) in S-PLUS that will determine the location, scale, and shape parameters for the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution? I’ve been using the robust library for gamma, weibull, and lognormal, but don’t see an option for the GEV anywhere. Thanks.

Win
